It’s only thanks to You Tube that I could find the name and face of the woman who sings this song. I heard this song a million times growing up, but sung only by my grandfather.
It’s his birthday today, and I remember how my vousin and I would stay with my grandparents for a few weeks every summer. In the morning, my grandpa would go into the bathroom to shave and I would hear him sing:
Those were the days my friends…
Usually he didn’t get much farther than that, or if he did I don’t remember. But I can close my eyes and hear the sound of his electric razor and the funny way he would pause just for an instant after he said the word “those.”
This Mary Hopkin is not as good as my grandpa, but it’s close enough for today.
Happy Birthday Grand Pa
I remember this song very well, my Dad sang this a lot while I was growing up. Whenever he would sing it, all of us would stop and listen, he was so funny, we would laugh hysterically. This song is one of my most treasured memories him. Then, when you and Cousie would hear him sing this song as you two were growing just made this song all the more special. “Those were the days my friend, we’d thought they’d never end, we’d sing and dance forever and a day……”….Happy Birthday Dad
Love this song! The most vivid memory that I have of this song is one day you, me, and Grandpa were out on the boat. Just the three of us. This song came on the radio and he started singing it very silly-like. You and I just laughed and laughed. I can still see him standing behind the steering wheel and the sun beating down on the lake while this song played. This song always takes me back to the lake and the fond memories of our summers with Grandpa. <3
