When people tell me they don’t see the point of theaters when you can watch movies at home in Ultra HD while wearing your pajamas and pausing to pee, I offer them this story:
As someone unconditionally and irrevocably in love with The Twilight Saga, I was sitting in the middle of a packed theater on opening night for New Moon, the second film in the franchise.
A quick glance around revealed there were zero empty seats, and exactly one occupied by a man.
When Edward, the film’s hero, first appeared on the screen, the 99.9% female audience screamed, whooped, and applauded.
We whooped and applauded again when Jacob, Edward’s rival for Bella’s affection, appeared.
Now that we’d gotten that out of our systems, we settled in to watch normal girl Bella agonize over her choice between hunky vampire Edward and hunky werewolf Jacob.
Except the hollering wasn’t quite finished.
When Edward’s sister Alice appeared, the lone man in the theater whooped and cheered.
It was good-natured ribbing, not cruel mocking, and the entire audience erupted into laughter.
I think of this every time I see any of the Twilight films.
Try having that experience alone in your underwear.

Ah, I’m a stay home movie goer but I think USA cinemas are probably a lot more comfortable than ours, I used to get backache sitting in our Odeon complex and they don’t let you have wine for heavens sakes! I’m too old for the Twilight franchise and felt the girly was making some really bad life decisions, she’d probably be much happier with a chap who doesn’t drink people’s blood or rips people to shreds wearing a wolf costume. 😁
Ha! You can buy wine in our theaters now, but for most of my life you couldn’t I was sneaking in candy and cans of Pepsi! Don’t tell the authorities!
If I was designing cinemas there’d be rows of 2 seater sofas in between rows of singles, and each one would have a toilet in the room with a portal to keep viewing the movie while you ‘went’. Also attachments to the armrests for a bottle of wine and glass holders.
So in other words, you living room with a bathroom close by! 🙂
The best of the Twilight movies, and yes, I saw it at the cinema on a date with a doctor who bought me a pie and chips afterwards. FaCt!

Is the correct answer. I was not impressed by the date, if the best they can offer is a steak pie supper in newspaper. Very tasty, but not a portent of good things to come. Next!
That packed theatre story made me smile. Sometimes I go to see movies with my wife where men are in very short supply, although we do try to avoid the packed theatre scenario so we’re talking a smaller sample size. In any case, that certainly is a memorable moment you’ll carry with you whenever checking out the Twilight franchise. Great post.

Circling back to a memory of going to see Breaking Dawn part one. I was delayed, and my female friend went to an earlier screning. We met at the bar as she came out and before I went in. Being a man sneaking in to see a Twlight movie was a hard look to pull off, so I loosely attached myself to a large group of women as they went in, then snuck off in the darkness to watch the film alone. Then the projector broke and I was revealed in my splendid isolation…

It takes moxie for a man to enter a Twilight film alone…well done.
